Synthetic Biology: From Inquiry for Knowledge to Creation for Application

十一月 2,2026

On October 29, Professor Wang Yong, a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences, was invited to the "Pursue·Excel" series lectures at the SHSID Science Fair. In the Xianmian Building Annex Auditorium, he delivered a lecture titled "Synthetic Biology: From Inquiry for Knowledge to Creation for Application," leading the attending teachers and students to deeply appreciate the charm of synthetic biology.

During the lecture, Professor Wang first reviewed the history of the discovery of natural medicines. He mentioned that in the last century, scientists successfully identified a number of natural products and widely applied them in disease treatment. However, based on the current industry landscape, he pointed out that the development and application of active metabolites from medicinal plants are facing many practical problems, and traditional extraction methods have become a bottleneck restricting the development of modern medicine. Facing these challenges, Professor Wang introduced the core concept of synthetic biology—moving from "Inquiry for Knowledge" to "Creation for Application." Drawing on his own research experience, he explained to the students how to design, modify, or even resynthesize microorganisms through engineering approaches, so as to efficiently and sustainably produce the drug molecules we need, providing a brand-new path to address the shortage of medicinal plant resources. He encouraged the students to pay attention to cultivating engineering thinking and practical abilities while exploring the mysteries of life.

This lecture was not only a transfer of frontier knowledge but also a collision of scientific thinking, allowing students to deeply appreciate the far-reaching significance of "Creation for Application" in synthetic biology. SHSID will also continue to use rich academic activities as a carrier to empower students' comprehensive development, letting the seeds of a love for science take root and sprout on campus.
